Liebe Tante und lieber Onkel

Obwohl ich Euch nicht als erster die guten Nachrichten mitteilen konnte, so bereitet es mir doch die größte Freude, Euch wenigstens zuerst die Details übermitteln u können. Alles ist sehr glatt verlaufen, obgleich das Kind durchwegs in Steißlage war und man auf Komplikationen rechnen konnte. Um Mitternacht begann Jani. etwas Wasser au verlieren und eine halbe Stunde später fingen Wehen an, die längere Zeit ziemlich leicht waren. Erst in der letzten Stunde hatte sie stärkere Schmerzen. Das Baby kam um 4:44 Uhr am 19. Februar zur Welt. Sie hatte also nur etwa vier Stunden Wehen. Shirley Ann wog 7 lbs ¾ oz (etwa 3.2Kilo) and war 19¼ inches lang (etwa 48 cm.) Sie ist sehr hell mit blondem Haar und blauen Augen, hat dicke Pausbacken und sieht sehr freundlich aus. Sie ähnelt Babsy überhaupt nicht, hat aber dafür irgendwie eine Ähnlichkeit mit beiden Großmüttern. Vorgestern Abend fing Jani an, sie zu nähren, und es sieht so aus, als ob sie sich gut dazu schickt (Babsy war ein schlechter Säugling). Wie Ihr Euch denken könnt, sind mir äusserst glücklich. Wir hatten sehr auf ein Mädchen gehofft, um die Familie zu vervollständigen. Aber man kann es sich ja nicht immer aussuchen.

Jani fühlt sich auch diesmal viel besser als nach der letzten Entbindung. Wir hatten einen sehr guten Arzt, den die ganze Zeit während der Wehen im Krankenhaus blieb und sich sehr um Jani kümmerte. Natürlich hat sie noch Beschwerden, ist aber sehr guten Mutes. Der Stammhalter nimmt die ganze Angelegenheit sehr gleichmütig hin. Während der Nacht ist er trotz der Unruhe im Hause nicht aufgewacht, und am Morgen war ich schon wieder zurück, um ihn anzuziehen und ihm Frühstück zu geben. Er war auf die Ankunft des Babys vorbereitet und akzeptierte meine Erklärung, daß Mummy beim Doktor sei, ohne weiteres. Er unterhält sich mit Jani über das Telephon.in seiner eigenen unnachahmbaren Weise. Sonst ist sehr zufrieden und amüsiert sich sehr gut bei den Nachbarn. Jetzt habe ich mir aber Ferien genommen und kann mich mehr um ihn kümmern. Jani wird wahrscheinlich morgen oder spätestens am Mittwoch nach Hause kommen. Dann muß sie sich natürlich och gut pflegen. Aber, wie gesagt, ich werde zwei Wochen lang nicht arbeiten gehen, und außerdem haben wir eine Nachbarin, die auf sehr gutem Fuß mit Babsy steht und sich oft ihn kümmern wird.

Die Nachrictvon Shirleys Geburt hat leider alle anderen Neuigkeiten überschattet. Aber das soll nicht heißen daß wir alle anderen neuen Entwicklung enn der, Familie vergessen. Liębe Tante, wir waren außerordentlich beglückt, als Mutter uns von Deiner Ernennung zum Professor schrieb. Wir gratulieren Dir allerherzlichst zu dieser wohlverdienten Ehre. Wie ich seinerzeit an Onkel schrieb, diese äußerliche Anerkennung kann kaum Deine wissenschaftliche Statur noch erhöhen. Deine Errungenschaften sind unvergesslich; aber ich freue mich doch sehr, daß nun auch die offiziellen Behörden ihre Anerkennung bezeugten. Ich muss gestehen, daß ich sehr stolz bin, zwei Professoren Onkel und Tante nennen zu dürfen.

Des weiteren muß ich mich auch bei Euch entschuldigen, daß ich Euch noch nicht für die verschiedenen Drucksachen gedankt habe. Die letzten Wochen raren sehr durcheinander, teilweise wegen Vorbereitungen für das Kind, teilweisewegen meiner Arbeit im Krankenhaus, die letzthin wieder einmal sehr zugenommen hat. Seit Weihnachten hatten wir einen ständig zunehmenden Patientenzensus und dazu mußte ich einen Vortrag über Brompsychosen halten. Also es gab mehr als genug zu tun. Ich habe mich sehr mit Onkels Buch, den beiden Artikeln und vor allem, mit der Zeitschrift sehr gefreut.

Dear aunt and uncle

She is very fair with blonde hair and blue eyes, has chubby cheeks and is very friendly looking. She doesn't look like Bubby[1] at all, but somehow she has a resemblance to both grandmothers. The night before last Jani started feeding her and it looks like she's doing well (Bubby was a bad baby). As you can imagine, I am extremely happy. We were really hoping for a girl to complete the family. But you can't always choose.

Jani feels much better this time than after the last birth. We had a very good doctor who stayed in the hospital the entire time she was in labor and took great care of Jani. Of course she still has problems, but she is in very good spirits. The ancestor takes the whole matter very calmly. Despite the commotion in the house, he didn't wake up during the night, and in the morning I was back to dress him and give him breakfast. He was prepared for the baby's arrival and readily accepted my explanation that Mummy was at the doctor. He talks to Jani over the telephone in his own inimitable way. Otherwise he is very happy and is having a great time with the neighbors. But now I've taken a vacation and can take more care of him. Jani will probably come home tomorrow or Wednesday at the latest. Then of course she has to take good care of herself. But, as I said, I won't be going to work for two weeks[2], and besides, we have a neighbor who is on very good terms with Bubby and will often look after him.

The news of Shirley's birth unfortunately overshadowed all other news. But that doesn't mean we forget all the other new developments in the family. Dear aunt, we were extremely happy when mother wrote to us about your appointment as professor. We warmly congratulate you on this well-deserved honor. As I wrote to Uncle at the time, this external recognition can hardly increase your scientific stature. Your achievements are unforgettable; But I am very pleased that the official authorities have now also shown their recognition. I have to admit that I am very proud to call two professors uncle and aunt.

I also have to apologize to you for not thanking you for the various printed matter. The last few weeks have been very confusing, partly because of preparations for the child, partly because of my work in the hospital, which has increased a lot recently. Since Christmas we have had a constantly increasing patient census and I had to give a lecture on bromine psychoses. So there was more than enough to do. I was very happy with Uncle's book, the two articles and, above all, the magazine.
